After the Tree Comes Down

The Stump Does Not Have to Stay

A leftover stump is a tripping hazard, a mowing obstacle, and a magnet for carpenter ants and other pests. It also locks up usable yard space — space that could be lawn, garden, patio, or a new tree.

Our crew grinds stumps cleanly below grade, from a single backyard stump to land clearing across an acreage. We bring the right machine for the job, work carefully around fences and landscaping, and leave your yard ready to use.

Free estimates. Honest pricing. Stump grinding can be added to any of our tree removals as a turnkey package.

Why It Matters

Why Grind the Stump?

A stump is more than an eyesore. Grinding it solves four real problems at once.

Safety

Tripping & Mowing Hazard

A leftover stump is easy to trip over and impossible to mow around. Grinding it below grade puts the safety issue to bed for good.

Property Health

Pest Magnet

Old stumps attract carpenter ants, termites, and wood-boring beetles. Removing the stump removes the habitat.

Usability

Yard Space Back

Reclaim the area for grass, garden beds, a patio, or a new tree. A flat, clean yard is a usable yard.

Long-Term

No Suckers, No Regrowth

Some species — cottonwood, alder, maple — will sucker from a fresh stump. Grinding below grade ends the regrowth cycle.

Stumps We Grind Across the Valley

Every species behaves differently when it comes time to grind. Here is what we deal with most across the Snoqualmie Valley and Greater Eastside.

Douglas Fir & Hemlock

Large conifer stumps with dense, fibrous root systems. Common on rural acreage and wooded lots across the valley.

Western Red Cedar

Big, often hollow at the heart. We can grind cedar stumps cleanly down past the root crown.

Bigleaf Maple

Wide root flares that take time to grind, but no problem with the right equipment.

Black Cottonwood & Alder

Notorious for suckering off the stump if left. Grinding below grade ends the regrowth cycle.

Fruit & Ornamental

Apple, cherry, plum, dogwood, magnolia — smaller stumps cleared quickly with minimal yard disruption.

Mixed-Species Lot Clearing

Land-clearing projects with multiple stumps across a property. We work efficiently in volume.

Frequently Asked

Stump Grinding FAQ

The most common questions we get about stump grinding.

How deep do you grind the stump?
Our standard is 4 to 8 inches below grade, which is enough for grass, garden beds, and most landscaping. If you are planning to replant a tree in the same spot or pour concrete, we can grind deeper on request. We will talk through the goal during the on-site estimate.
What about the roots?
Stump grinding removes the stump and the visible root flares above and just below grade. Smaller lateral roots stay in the ground and decompose naturally over time. For most landscaping uses, this is exactly what you want — no upheaval, no torn-up yard.
Do you haul the wood chips away?
Either way works. We can leave the chips on-site (they are excellent mulch for garden beds and around other trees), rake them into a tidy pile for you to use later, or haul them away entirely. Your call.
Can you grind a stump near my house, fence, or sprinklers?
Yes. We work carefully around structures, fences, irrigation lines, and underground utilities. We always recommend a 811 call-before-you-dig locate before grinding near utilities, and we will coordinate with you on it.
How long does it take?
A single backyard stump is usually 30 minutes to an hour. Large old-growth conifer stumps can take longer. Multiple stumps on a property are typically done in a single visit.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Yes, with a deeper grind and some soil amendment. The chips left behind are mostly carbon and will temporarily pull nitrogen from the soil as they break down — easy to address by removing the chips, adding topsoil, and planting fresh.
Do you only grind stumps from trees you removed?
Not at all. We grind stumps from any source — trees you removed yourself, stumps left by a previous owner, or storm-fall stumps from years past.
